Social Studies Leaders PLC at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum

We have 8 days until we meet again! This time, we will meet at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum in Augusta, Georgia! You can still sign up and we look forward to seeing you there!

At this workshop we will tour the museum, discover how Lucy Laney relates to Georgia Standards, look at writing in social studies and specifically narrative writing/ taking a perspective, and tour downtown Augusta to learn how various locations in our local area can help teach history and social studies! Lunch will be provided by National Geographic again - yum!

During our PLC at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum, we will recognize an outstanding Social Studies teacher from our RESA area that was nominated by their school leadership! It will be an exciting day of learning, exploring, and celebrating for our Social Studies Leaders!!!

RECAP:

At our last session in September, we were able to discuss how map and globe skills are lacking in our students and generate a few ideas to help us get them more engaged in strengthening these skills. We practiced using a map analysis form, discussed the importance of pre/during/and post map reading activities to help with comprehension, and received a list of web resources that could be useful in teaching these skills more explicitly.

We also learned about Discovery Education and GPB resources that are free to all teachers in the state of Georgia, set up our accounts, and looked at some of their resources for map and globe skills. We also had a tasty lunch from Chick-Fil-A sponsored by Discovery Education!
