HAPPY NEW YEAR! I am so excited about Spring 2018 as I have so many teachers who are working hard to create unique, effective, and GSE-aligned resources for their classrooms and to share with our community!
Our newest featured UNIT plan was written by Mrs. April Clark who teachers 3rd and 4th grade Social Studies and ELA at Glascock County Elementary School (resources at the end of page). The Unit covers SS4H4 Examine the main ideas of the abolitionist and suffrage movements. a. Discuss contributions of and challenges faced by Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman.
The FIVE lessons in this unit truly have students "examine" the abolitionist and suffrage movements through questioning, discussions, reading, writing, small-group activities, and document analysis!
Mrs. Clark incorporates several high-impact, research-based, effective instructional strategies to help engage students in the material. Another strength of the unit is that lessons integrate SS Matrices - Information Processing Skills and ELA standards focusing on: comparing and contrasting, character traits, speaking and listening skills, formulating good research questions, and writing with evidence.
Resources included: lesson plans, graphic organizers and "Ain't I a Woman?" text, instructions for the activities:
"Quotation Mingle," and "I See, I Think, I Wonder."
Thanks to Mrs. Clark for sharing her unit with us!!! This certainly took a lot of time and effort!
